Custom crafted for Prelude Tea Company by a Tokoname master using legendary local techniques, this handmade Japanese teapot balances perfectly in the hand and enables total control over brewing and pouring. Simple, yet elegant, it is suitable for use by both newcomers to tea and connoisseurs. Tokoname’s famous teapots have brewed delicious tea for hundreds of years: this kyusu is a testament to that tradition.

The Story of Our Teapot: A Journey to Tokoname

Tokoname, located on the Chita Peninsula in Aichi Prefecture, is one of the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan, with a history dating back to the Heian period.

The Prelude Kyusu (teakettle) was specially crafted for the Prelude Tea Company by "Koushi," a long-established kiln in Tokoname.

Tokoname's iron-rich shudei (vermilion clay) has the characteristic of mellowing the astringency of tea while enhancing its umami and aroma. This Kyusu utilizes this natural power of the clay, along with Koushi's unique patented technology, the "Sasame (bamboo-eye)" filter. Each piece is meticulously crafted by artisans, resulting in an extremely fine ceramic strainer that captures the full flavor of the tea leaves, extracting a delicate taste. This results in a mellow and soft mouthfeel that cannot be achieved with a metal strainer.

The handle is designed at a 90-degree angle, fitting naturally in the hand and providing stability when pouring. Furthermore, the lid and body are shaped and fired together in the same kiln, resulting in a precise fit even after firing. This flawless finish is a testament to the meticulous skill of Tokoname artisans.

At the core of Koushi's craftsmanship is the philosophy of "creating things that are easy for the user to use." This principle is alive in the Prelude Kyusu. It is designed to fit comfortably in anyone's hand, enriching the daily cup of tea with quiet tranquility. That is the true beauty of this teapot.

Moreover, this Kyusu matures with use. The aroma of the tea leaves and the components of the hot water slowly penetrate the clay surface, deepening its character over time.
